If It Doesn't Work On A Phone, It Doesn't Work

Most of your customers will never see your site on a laptop. Here's why that changes everything about how it should be built.

Think about the last time you searched for a local business. Were you sitting at a desktop computer, or standing somewhere with your phone in your hand? For almost everyone, almost every time, it's the phone.

That means your website's most important version, the one that actually decides whether someone messages you, is the mobile one. Not the wide-screen version that looks great in a design mockup. The narrow, one-thumb, three-second-attention-span version.

What "mobile-first" actually means in practice

  • Text big enough to read without zooming in
  • Buttons big enough to tap without missing and hitting the wrong thing
  • The most important information (what you do, where you work, how to contact you) visible without endless scrolling
  • Fast loading, because nobody waits ten seconds for a site to load standing outside in the sun

The test that matters

Open your current website on your own phone right now, using mobile data, not WiFi. Does it load quickly? Can you read the text without pinching to zoom? Can you find your phone number or WhatsApp link in under three seconds? If the answer to any of those is no, that's very likely where you're losing people. Not because your business isn't good enough, but because the site made it hard to act.

A site that looks impressive on a laptop but frustrates someone on their phone isn't a good website. It's a good website for the wrong device.
